The Maldives has 839,615 mobile subscriptions and 143 of them for every hundred residents — and it is still 7% below where it was nine years ago. The base has been growing again since 2022, but the revenue it carries has not. Reconstructed from 173 months of regulator data and thirty operator-quarters of filings.
Dredging a square foot of Maldivian land costs somewhere between MVR 60 and MVR 98. The state then sells it at MVR 1,700 to MVR 4,500. That gap is either the cost of the infrastructure underneath it or an economic rent, and no published document in the country tells you which — including for the project whose dredging alone would cost several times the nation's usable reserves.
"Because it's an island" is not an explanation, it is a shrug. Decomposing a Maldivian shelf price shows that geography is the smallest layer and foreign-exchange access is the largest — a roughly one-third cost differential between two firms importing the identical good, which appears in no official statistic.
Every dataset carries its lineage. Every forecast publishes its
backtest. Every claim is tagged with what it is and where it came
from — official statistic, verified transaction, asking price, or
our own calculation — so you always know what you're standing on.

If the only evidence you have is an asking price, you don't have a market.
Markets
When the market has no precedent, you don't settle for approximation.
Six markets, researched as one system. The differentiation is not the
list — it is the connections between them: population drives housing,
migration drives consumption, infrastructure revalues land. Research is
filed under the market it primarily addresses and cross-listed into
every market it informs.
The research is public. The answer to your question isn't.
01
Public research
Papers, datasets and frameworks on the markets shaping the
Maldives — published in full, sourced and tiered, free to read
and free to check.
02
Commissioned intelligence
Market studies, feasibility and financial analysis, scenario
modelling and decision support — built to the same standard,
against a specific question, using evidence the public record
does not contain.
03
Strategic advisory
Sustained work with businesses, investors and institutions where
the analysis has to survive contact with a board, a lender or a
regulator.
Most writing about frontier markets blurs the line between an
official statistic, a developer's asking price and a rumor. We
don't. Every important number we publish is tagged with what it is
and where it came from — and when the data doesn't exist, we say so
instead of inventing it.
