The House
A portrait, quietly held.
Soneva Jani sits inside the Medhufaru lagoon in the Noonu Atoll — five islands ringed by 5.6 kilometres of clear water. The largest, Medhufaru, runs to 150 acres. The house was built to feel like a castaway camp drawn at a higher resolution — villas in sustainable timber, decks open to the lagoon, a Barefoot Guardian to handle the rest. Most water villas open directly onto the lagoon with a private pool, a retractable roof above the bed, and a slide from the upper floor into the sea. Island villas tuck into the greenery — pool, white sand, and a few paces to the shore. Sixty-one villas across the property, ranging from one to five bedrooms — every one with bicycles, a walk-in minibar, and three places to sit down for dinner. The programming runs wide. A 16-inch Meade telescope rises through the floor of the observatory. A weekly barefoot dinner on North Beach. A Marine Biology Centre, a turtle rehabilitation centre run with the Olive Ridley Project, an organic garden that feeds most kitchens — and a cinema set on stilts over the water.
